Brain Awareness Week (BAW) is an annual international event that aims through exhibitions and public lectures to inspire the next generation of scientists, contribute to understanding of the brain, expand awareness of neurological disorders and highlight the connection between biomedical research and benefits to public health. Now in its 15th year a wide variety of groups including universities, hospitals, patient groups, government agencies, professional organizations amongst others celebrate the brain.
To mark BAW, the NUI Galway Neuroscience Cluster organized an outreach event at the Eyre Square Shopping Centre on Wednesday March 10th. It received coverage in the local press and on radio and subsequently attracted a wide variety of visitors including those simply interested in learning more about their brains, schoolchildren from local schools,
and those working for local support groups involved with people with CNS disorders. The event taught visitors about the workings of the brain though hands-on activities and games and raised awareness about a variety of disorders through distribution of literature.
