Cancer
The Cancer research theme is developing a functional understanding of cancer, its cellular and molecular basis, the biology of tumours, and the translation of biological knowledge into new and effective markers and treatments. Over the last number of years, NUI Galway and UCHG have built a strong foundation in cancer research through strategic recruitment of internationally recognised basic and translational cancer researchers and clinicians.
Among our major research programmes, multidisciplinary research clusters are working to understand the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms responsible for the initiation and progression of cancer, and to develop new and better cancer therapies. We also have a strong translational and clinical research programme with the objective of translating our research discoveries into improved patient care.
There are a number of research clusters with a focus on cancer including the Centre for Chromosome Biology led by Professor Noel Lowndes , the Apoptosis Cluster led by Dr Howard Fearnhead and the Cell Signalling Group led by Professor Larry Egan. All of these have strong links with clinical teams in medicine, surgery, radiology and pathology.
In addition to the basic research programmes, clinically based programmes have developed for Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer which are closely integrated with the programmes in the NCBES through the development of the Galway Cancer Initiative.
