Biomedical Engineering
The Biomedical Engineering theme incorporates biomechanics, biomaterials, tissue engineering, and bioelectronics research into joint collaborative research projects focused on cardiovascular, musculo-skeletal, rehabilitation, and neural bioelectronics research. The research spans the fundamental to the translational and strong linkages have been developed with clinicians at Galway University Hospitals (GUH, including University College Hospital Galway and Merlin Park Hospital, Galway), as well as other clinical centres. Linkages are particularly strong between researchers and the medical technologies industry sector, including major medical device companies based in the Galway region, and nationally. Major current initiatives within the biomedical engineering theme involve recent awards from Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), including an SFI Strategic Research Cluster (SRC) award in Functional Biomaterials, and SFI Lectureships in Biomechanics and Biomaterials. NCBES researchers play a lead role nationally in biomedical engineering research, education and training, and are leading a major national and international network to set up PhD graduate programme in Biomedical Engineering and Medical Device Technologies.
